Inspiring Tremendous Change in the Community

In the small, isolated house in Kampong Thom Province, Cambodia lives a 15-year-old girl, who was transformed from a disconnected child to an enthusiastic facilitator at a community reading camp, demonstrating how sponsorship can accelerate significant improvements in children and their communities.

“I felt honored to have been awarded the sponsorship. It motivates me to study harder,” Nita vividly remembered her joy when she first became a sponsored child in 2016, an occasion that marked the beginning of her education.

“As a mother, I’m extremely delighted that World Vision and the sponsors have helped my child, and I’m very proud of Nita for becoming a sponsored child and a reading camp facilitator. She has so much potential for the community,” says Sithaen.

Nita is in grade 10. In addition to becoming an enthusiastic reader, she also used her abilities to read books to her parents; now, she is among the top students in her class and works every Sunday at a village reading camp to teach children, inspiring tremendous change in her neighbourhood through education and engagement.

World Vision’s sponsorship programme has benefited many families, including Nita’s. “World Vision launched several initiatives in our community, including hygiene and clean water programmes through piped water station construction, school construction, reading camps, libraries, and school supplies for vulnerable children. They also gave books, pencils, clothing, bicycles, and bags to assist youngsters in getting to school,” Nita states.

As a sponsored child, Nita has a special connection with her sponsor. “My favourite letter was when she asked how I was and wished me a happy birthday. Then she talked about her birthday and the culture she came from. It made my heart smile. I expressed my deep appreciation for her encouragement and kind words,” Nita adds.

“For Nita, the change has been empowering. Even though she lived away from the community, being a sponsored child connected her with many friends and acquainted her with the community,” says Sora, World Vision’s Community Development Facilitator. “Nita was just a student in the reading camp, and now she is a facilitator. It’s truly remarkable and inspiring.”

A few blocks from Nita’s house, a reading camp had been established. With its appealing tables and chairs, this camp acted as a welcoming centre for children in the neighborhood, a place where they could immerse themselves in a wide range of books, and diligently work on their art and reading assignments. The reading camp where Nita is teaching can accommodate 15-30 children. “I teach children how to read and write, helping them to make better use of their time,” she says.

“My dream is to become a doctor, to treat the villagers in my community when they’re sick,” she says. Nita expressed her hope to meet her sponsor one day as well as her huge appreciation for the life-changing effect the sponsorship has had. “If I ever meet my sponsor, I wouldn’t hesitate to thank her profusely for her role in my life and tell her I am truly grateful,” she continued.

“These letters from sponsors not only broaden children’s perspective but also inspire them to think about their future, especially when their sponsor asks what they want to be in the future,” says Sora.
