Dear Reader,
Hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition seemed remote and distant… ...
When food waste accounts for about 30% of municipal solid waste in Hong Kong, it is a harsh reality that hundreds of thousands of children around the world still go to bed hungry every day, cannot concentrate on their studies, or experience developmental delays, losing motivation and hope for the future due to the lack of food.
The data from the 2024 edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report tells us that globally, approximately 11%, or around 733 million people, are facing hunger. Insufficient food is one of the many problems; but more alarmingly, it brings about severe social crises such as looting, conflict, violence, child marriage, and child labour. The primary victims of these crises are inevitably children. Nonetheless, a nutritious meal provided by schools brings a glimmer of hope.
The School Meals Coalition formed by United Nations agencies, various governments, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector, is actively promoting a global initiative. The initiative aims to provide nutritious meals in schools, encouraging parents to send their children to school, which in turn increases attendance rates, reduces the impact of hunger on learning, and improves children's health and academic performance. In a small village in Africa, a tearful mother shared that her child no longer needed to endure hunger due to the school lunches. Her child is very happy to attend school, and the grades are improving. A nutritious meal does not only fill the stomach but rebuilds hope.
The journey towards combating hunger is extremely challenging and full of uncertainties. Budgets for a considerable amount of humanitarian and development projects are significantly reduced due to insufficient funding. Global hunger and nutrition advocacy projects have already been affected, and all United Nations and related non-governmental organisations are cautiously evaluating and considering how to respond to this sudden change.
Despite the difficulties, we continue to face challenges head-on, raising awareness about hunger and helping ensure that every child can eat well, receive proper nutrition, and grow up healthy.
Yours truly,
