Dear Reader,
In August, I took part in an achievement sharing session highlighting the impact of our work in the Child Sponsorship programme. While it was a pleasure to gather with about a hundred dedicated sponsors, the most memorable moment was when I got to present the certificates of appreciation to nearly 30 long-term sponsors who have been supporting the children we serve for more than 30 years. 30 years of unwavering support is not easy at all. The Child Sponsorship programme has been running in Hong Kong for over 40 years, and there have been over 400 donors sponsoring children since then for over three decades. Among those long-term donors I met that day, some started their sponsorship journey when they were still in school, while others began sponsoring children when they first entered work. What they all have in common is that they have sponsored one child after another, helping different Area Programmes complete development work over the years, while passing on blessings around the world.
This Winter, on 8 December, for the first time in Hong Kong, World Vision is organising Global 6K for Water. This worldwide event aims to help vulnerable children gain access to clean, fresh water. Whether you are participating or not, please read the feature article in this issue to learn how clean water can be life-changing for children. Please also support Gift Catalogue, sending a practical gift heading to poor children in another part of the world.
As I write this letter, the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and Lebanon are being reported on TV. Millions of children have fled their homes. In addition to being displaced, missing school, and suffering from severe food shortages, these children are experiencing psychological trauma that urgently needs attention. It is unknown when the conflict will end, but our frontline staff will always remain dedicated to addressing the needs of these children and providing timely assistance to the best of their abilities.
It is expected that the world economy and global situation will continue to be uncertain in 2025, with the climate and food crises likely to intensify. We hope that everyone will continue to work with us to care for and help poor and vulnerable children, so that they can have the opportunity to enjoy fulfilling lives.
Yours truly,
Amy Fung
