Eastern Afghanistan Hit by Magnitude 6 Earthquake — Update

Eastern Afghanistan has been struck by a devastating earthquake followed by a series of aftershocks over the span of just three days, resulting in widespread destruction.

  • On September 1, 2025 (Hong Kong time), a powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan. With a shallow depth of just 10 km, the quake caused severe casualties and destruction, particularly in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces.
  • The death toll from the first quake has now surpassed 1,400, with thousands more injured and thousands of homes reduced to rubble.
  • While rescuers were searching through the rubble for survivors, multiple aftershocks occurred—one of which measured 5.5 on the Richter scale—further complicating and hindering the search and recovery efforts.
  • Rescue operations face immense challenges due to landslides, blocked roads, and damaged infrastructure. Many villages can only be reached by foot, taking three to four hours or by helicopter.

Thamindri De Silva, National Director of World Vision Afghanistan, stated, “The affected areas are among the most remote in Afghanistan. Entire villages have been flattened, with many families remain trapped beneath the rubble of their collapsed mud and timber homes. Access to food, medical care, clean water, and education was already limited in these regions. A disaster of this scale has deepened existing vulnerabilities and intensified humanitarian needs.”

After multiple aftershocks, Thamindri De Silva added, “We are witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe unfold in real time. The scale of destruction is staggering, and children—already vulnerable—are now facing even greater risks to their health, safety, and survival.”

World Vision’s Response

World Vision has declared a Category II Partnering Response, aiming to support the interagency relief effort through national NGO partners already active in the affected provinces.

Thamindri De Silva also emphasized, “World Vision is mobilising to support the response through trusted national partners. We are committed to ensuring that children are not forgotten in this crisis, and that their urgent needs are prioritised.”

Children and families urgently need:

  • Lifesaving medical care
  • Food Assistance
  • Safe water, sanitation & hygiene
  • Emergency shelter
  • Blankets, hygiene kits & essentials
  • Protection for unaccompanied children and psychological support

World Vision teams are on the ground with local partners conducting assessments and delivering aid. We urgently need your support. Please extend a helping hand to the survivors of the Afghanistan earthquake and help them through this crisis.
