Dear Reader,

Did you know that the origin of World Vision is closely related to our motherland? This year marks the 75th anniversary of World Vision, and to commemorate this milestone, the President and CEO of World Vision International, Mr. Andrew Morley, visited Hong Kong to join World Vision Day. Together, we also embarked on a journey tracing the roots of the organisation and went to the Former A.R.C.M. Girls’ Schools in Gulangyu Island, Xiamen City, China. This is the place where our founder, Dr. Bob Pierce, first met a young girl named Baiyu — a moment that led to the initial idea of child sponsorship.

The planning for the trip was far more challenging than we had anticipated. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Former A.R.C.M. Girls’ Schools remains privately owned and has long been closed to the public. Despite our many efforts, we were unable to secure permission to enter the site. But God has made a way when we were on a ferry to Gulangyu. We met a local pastor, and with his help, we found Ms. Liao, an art teacher who has a painting studio within the property. Though we had never met before, she graciously welcomed us, accompanying us to step into this historically significant place — to visit her studio and look at where Dr. Bob Pierce first encountered Baiyu.

I believe that even when we felt uncertain and were finding our way forward, God was already at work, opening doors we never imagined. This experience reminded us that with a heart of obedience and trust, even the most difficult situations are under God’s hands. For 75 years, World Vision has firmly held onto this belief.

Back in 1947, Dr. Bob Pierce taught children on Gulangyu to sing a Christian song, This Little Light of Mine, “This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine…”

To this day, the song continues to inspire us. “This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine…” May this song also encourage and remind you that every seemingly small act can bring blessings and hope to children in need, just like every gift we have in our Gift Catalogue, whether it is nutritious food, scholastic items, or livestock that improve livelihoods, all of these can brighten the future for children.

Yours truly,
Amy Fung

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.”
