I Can Go to School Again

By Florence Joy Maluyo

“My mother told me that I had to quit school because they could no longer pay for my school fees. It made me sad, but I understood their decision,” says Salma, a 10-year-old girl from the Philippines.

“My husband got sick and could barely provide for us.” Salma’s mother recalls how she was always worried that her children would faint in class when they didn’t have breakfast. Her circumstances forced her to choose between her children’s education and their daily survival. “It was painful for all of us to ask Salma to quit school. She cried a lot.”

In the next two years, Salma helped her parents in their small fruit stand business. Whenever she saw her classmates go to school, she would pray that she could join them again one day. To Salma, her sponsor was God’s answer to her prayers.

In 2019, World Vision started its sponsorship programme in Salma’s community. Salma is one of the 2,000 children who became part of the programme. “The World Vision staff told me that I should send Salma back to school, and that they would be there to help us. That gave me hope for my daughter. I have also seen how World Vision helped us especially when the pandemic started. We received food and cash support. Salma also received school supplies, which I couldn’t afford to buy for her,” said Salma’s mother thankfully.

“I was excited to go back to school. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to have face-to-face classes. We are now doing modular learning from home,” says Salma. Learning amid the pandemic is challenging for Salma. Her parents can barely help her when she does not understand her lessons. “I only finished Grade 1, so there is not much I can help her with,” says her mother.

Despite the situation, Salma finds ways to finish all her requirements at school. “I study every morning and make sure I finish the modules on time.” She dreams of becoming a nurse one day, and is grateful for the chance given by her sponsor. “Thank you to my sponsor. I promise to study harder. Please take care always,” says Salma thankfully.
