I am Much Happier Now

By Emmanuel A. Okello

9-year-old Gracious is a Primary 5 student in Uganda. Since the passing of her father, she has been living with her mother Scovia, a teacher, in a house with no electricity. For Scovia, rent and her daughter’s school fees were a heavy burden.

The nearest water source was a borehole at a health centre a few kilometres away. “Children would cross the busy road to get water at the health facility. It was dangerous for them,” Scovia says. Gracious would be late for her classes if she had to fetch water in the morning. This affected her performance in school.

To help the community access clean water, World Vision constructed a new borehole in the school, making it a lot easier for Gracious and her friends to get water. A new teachers’ quarters at the school was also constructed. After moving into the new facility, Gracious and her mother were also provided with solar-charged lamps. This made it easier for Gracious to revise in the evening after school.

In 2019, Gracious became a World Vision sponsored child and a lot has since changed. Being a single mother, life was hard for Scovia and her daughter. She says that World Vision staff would always visit them and encourage them to read the Bible and to trust God in all they do.

“World Vision has empowered me with knowledge and opened my eyes to a lot of things,” says Scovia. After receiving training in financial literacy and livelihoods, Scovia is able to grow a variety of vegetables that have helped to boost her family’s nutrition. “When I have excess, I sell some of the vegetables at the nearby market.” With the skills she received from World Vision, Scovia and other parents of sponsored children started a savings group through which they save at least UGX 10,000 (US$6) each month.

With an additional classroom block constructed, students now have more space in class. They have also received more equipment for school, including books and stationery. Even though schools have been suspended because of the pandemic, Gracious and her friends are still able to continue their studies at home through World Vision’s support. “Life is now better since World Vision came into our lives and I am happier,” says Gracious.
