Today, climate change is intensifying and occurrences of extreme weather are becoming more frequent. The latest UN figures show that Africa is the region where the proportion of the population affected by hunger has increased the most, with 278 million or about one in five people facing hunger. In the Horn of Africa, drought has rapidly exacerbated the local food crisis and the region is on the verge of famine. However, geopolitics has hindered food production and supply chains, and transportation costs of international relief supplies have soared.
Affected by continuous natural disasters and conflicts, local farmers and herders in South Sudan and Somalia, two countries in the Horn of Africa, have lost their livelihoods, and are forced to be displaced in order to feed their stomachs and escape from natural and man-made disasters. Many hungry children suffer from severe malnutrition due to long-term starvation.
Funds raised from this year's Skip-A-Meal will support World Vision to provide emergency food assistance, mobile medical treatment and water supply facilities for impoverished children and families in South Sudan and Somalia. Join us to show your care and extend a helping hand to starving children!
Due to the conflict in her hometown in Somalia, 14-year-old Rahima lost her home and was forced to move to an internally displaced persons camp with her family. They have been staying in the settlement for 5 years already.
Not knowing when they could return home, Rahima and her family now also face food insecurity because of drought and skyrocketing food prices in the market. She just hopes her little brother would recover from malnutrition and measles soon. To help starving children and families in Somalia like Rahima, World Vision has been providing emergency food aid and nutrition support in the country.
