On 14 April 2010, a catastrophic earthquake rocked Qinghai Province, China; over 100,000 people were affected and nearly 2,700 died. The earthquake also destroyed numerous houses and schools, leaving many in despair.

World Vision sincerely thanks you for your generous support in our relief and rehabilitation efforts in Qinghai over the past year. World Vision raised over HK$40 million for relief and rehabilitation work, benefiting around 130,000 people. We will continue to work hard in meeting the needs of the needy, helping them to restore their normal routine and to stand by them as they move on from their grief.

World Vision has carried out emergency relief work in China since 1982. World Vision employs 800 staff in China, and we are in charge of the planning, management, supervision and assessment of various development programmes. We also maintain close cooperation and relationship with local communities and government officials.

World Vision’s completed work in Qinghai:

  • Food: 1,000 boxes of instant noodles and 1,236,180 kg of flour were distributed
  • Shelter: 230 hygiene kits, 2,000 quilts, 5,000 beds, 2,150 tents were distributed; houses were built for 32 families
  • Education: 290 fire safety equipment, 200 school tents, 8,320 sets of desk and chair and 5,000 back-to-school kits were also distributed for helping school children got back to school
  • Child Protection: 1,040 Child-friendly kits were distributed; 2 Child-friendly Spaces were set up for children to relieve their emotional distress as well as learn and play in a safe environment. Psychosocial support were provided for around 10,400 children; 4,000 school boarders’ packs, 2,000 winter kits, 3,000 winter jackets, and 3,580 student quilts were also distributed.
  • Disaster Risk Reduction: 5 disaster risk reduction training sessions were provided for the survivors

We will continue to provide appropriate assistance for survivors. Major ongoing work includes:

  • Child Protection: Psychosocial support will be provided for around 10,400 children; and 8 more Child-friendly Spaces will be set up
  • Disaster Risk Reduction: Disaster risk reduction training will be provided for around 500 survivors
  • Shelter: Houses will be built for over 300 families
  • Livelihood: “Agricultural Rehabilitation” programmes and “Livelihood Recovery ” training will be arranged for at least 6,000 people

Over the past year, the road to rehabilitation is still a long one for the survivors in Qinghai. Thanks to donors’ support, World Vision is able to stand by these children and continue to carry out various rehabilitation projects in the affected areas. But in the mainland and many poor countries around the world, poor children are still in dire need as they often fail to obtain even basic daily necessities.
