Sharing from PGDE Placement Student in 2023

In October 2023, 2 students from the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong joined World Vision Hong Kong as placement students in public education. Not only did they have the opportunity to learn about issues related to development and poverty alleviation, but they also applied their learning by supporting the creation of various educational resources. Here are what they say about their time with us.

Michael Tsui (HKU)

Before the internship, I had limited knowledge about World Vision, except for the 30-Hour Famine. During the five-week placement, I visited different kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, and tertiary institutions to attend various talks and experiential activities. Through these experiences, I came to understand that World Vision's main focus is to serve the most vulnerable children and their families who are suffering and in need of help. I also realised that war, climate change and natural disasters, and famines as a result, are problems that still persist today. I am grateful to the staff at World Vision for giving me the opportunity to deliver one of the talks, and for the rehearsals before the presentation, which are encouraging, and have equipped me with valuable public speaking skills. I believe these experiences will greatly benefit me when hosting morning assemblies and weekly meetings in school in the future.

In addition, I also worked on the Ign!te e-newsletter, which has deepened my understanding of issues such as climate change, pandemics, and child marriage. Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to all the World Vision staff members. Each and every one of you has been incredibly friendly and helpful. I felt the love and support from everyone throughout the month, and I truly enjoyed every day of work in here. I sincerely wish all the World Vision staff a pleasant and fulfilling time with the organisation.

Melissa Liu (HKU)

I am very grateful for the opportunity to work as an intern at World Vision. One of the missions of World Vision’s Public Education department is to help educate students on global issues, especially those impacting the impoverished and vulnerable, and inspire them to grow as global citizens. Having the privilege to visit different talks by World Vision at schools, I really witnessed this being accomplished with the care and efforts of World Vision colleagues, and it has left a lasting impression on me. Living in a place like Hong Kong, we are very fortunate and it is easy to feel distanced from issues like poverty. However, as a future educator, I hope to influence my students to care about global issues and give back to the society. I also had the opportunity to support various projects, and this has helped me grow in greater understanding of the issues around the world and has challenged me of how I can advocate and help the vulnerable in my own time.
