Nepal 7.9 Earthquake World Vision Begins Relief Efforts

On 25 April, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake devastated northwest Nepal, causing thousands of deaths and injuries. The continuous aftershocks are posing great challenges to relief work. Houses and buildings have toppled over and the quake has also triggered avalanches in the Himalayas.

World Vision Hong Kong's Chief Executive Officer Kevin Chiu says, ''World Vision has been working in Nepal for over 30 years, and more than 200 local staff are assisting the relief efforts on the ground. Water and power ran out in affected areas, and communications were down. Millions of people have lost their homes and are in dire needs of food, water, shelter, warm clothing and hygiene kits. They need our help urgently!''

World Vision Hong Kong has initially committed HK$1.56 million, together with donations from other World Vision offices, will deliver relief items such as hygiene kits, sleeping mats, cooking sets etc. to the quake-stricken people. Child Friendly Space will also be set up to release the emotional distress of children. It's estimated 100,000 people will be benefited from the relief efforts.
