Frequent natural disasters, such as the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in early March, killed many people and put many more into a state of chaos. However, there is another kind of "silent tsunami" - Hunger, which kills 25,000 precious lives around the world daily. Those suffering from this "silent tsunami" are in fact very much in need of our attention and urgent help.
As increased inflation led to soaring food prices, an additional 44 million people worldwide have been driven into living on less than two U.S. dollars a day. The number of people living in dire starvation is a staggering 925 million, residing mostly in Africa and South Asia. Hunger and malnutrition have surpassed AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis to become the world's number one killer; young children are often the ones who suffer the most.
Kenya | 1.1 million people suffer from malnutrition |
Ethiopia | Of the 79 million population, 34% of them are malnourished |
Uganda | 4.4 million people suffer from malnutrition; over 30% of all children are malnourished |
Somalia | One in every six children is malnourished, 35,000 of them in critical condition; 90% live in areas of political instability |
Niger | 2.3 million people caught in food crisis due to drought |
Bangladesh | 27% (40 million) of the population suffer from malnutrition |
India | Of 1.134 billion people, 43% are underweight children |
Myanmar | Nearly 20% of the total population are malnourished |
Nepal | A total of 4 million people are undernourished, accounting for 16% of the total population; 15.5% children under five suffer from acute malnutrition, higher than World Health Organisation's warning level |
Pakistan | 3.5 million people's lives are threatened by food shortages |
