Colombia Hit by Country’s Strongest Earthquake This Century; World Vision Assessing Damage and Needs

Beyond casualties, multiple cities across the region have been severely impacted:

– At least 61 buildings collapsed with people trapped, and more than 1,600 buildings are damaged or destroyed.

– A total of 24 schools and hospitals, as well as 20 health centers, have been affected nationwide.

– 7 airports sustained severe damage and are temporarily closed, severely hampering humanitarian access to disaster zones.

– Vast areas of Chocó department are largely isolated due to interrupted local transport; there is an urgent need for medical supplies, drinking water, food, and aerial bridge for relief efforts.

– Wide areas are facing disruptions to electricity, gas, and water.
