Over 900 million people worldwide are in dire hunger

Frequent natural disasters, such as the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in early March, killed many people and put many more into a state of chaos. However, there is another kind of "silent tsunami" - Hunger, which kills 25,000 precious lives around the world daily. Those suffering from this "silent tsunami" are in fact very much in need of our attention and urgent help.

As increased inflation led to soaring food prices, an additional 44 million people worldwide have been driven into living on less than two U.S. dollars a day. The number of people living in dire starvation is a staggering 925 million, residing mostly in Africa and South Asia. Hunger and malnutrition have surpassed AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis to become the world's number one killer; young children are often the ones who suffer the most.

Critical regions in Africa:

Kenya 1.1 million people suffer from malnutrition
Ethiopia Of the 79 million population, 34% of them are malnourished
Uganda 4.4 million people suffer from malnutrition; over 30% of all children are malnourished
Somalia One in every six children is malnourished, 35,000 of them in critical condition; 90% live in areas of political instability
Niger 2.3 million people caught in food crisis due to drought

Critical regions in South Asia:

Bangladesh 27% (40 million) of the population suffer from malnutrition
India Of 1.134 billion people, 43% are underweight children
Myanmar Nearly 20% of the total population are malnourished
Nepal A total of 4 million people are undernourished, accounting for 16% of the total population; 15.5% children under five suffer from acute malnutrition, higher than World Health Organisation's warning level
Pakistan 3.5 million people's lives are threatened by food shortages
