3D-printed Limbs Bring Students Closer to Technology and Disaster Relief

During summer 2021, 39 students from 21 secondary schools gathered at the University of Hong Kong to attend World Vision’s very first Teens Excursion Workshop: My Hand in Your Hands. Apart from having a taste of assembling and maneuvering 3D-printed prosthetic limbs, participants also listen to a sharing by 3D Printed Prosthetics, a social enterprise, on how innovative technology help disabled people overcome the challenges in life. At the event, World Vision staff shared how they employ technology in disaster-hit countries to help meet the basic needs of the affected.

Some of the participating students told us what impressed them most:

“When assembling the prosthetic limbs, I learnt that the screws in different parts vary in lengths. If something goes wrong during the fitting process, the end results may vary greatly. We have seen how others use prosthetics online before, but we never imagined it would be this difficult to actually assemble them.” (Frankie)

“We don’t get to learn a lot about technology in the school curriculum. What the workshop impresses me most is seeing how technology is applied in disaster relief.” (Jovial)

“I think innovation is the key. If you are interested, you can learn more from the internet. When competitions or similar workshops arise, you can readily provide more input with your creativity, or even inspire others to do things in novel ways or forms, so as to help more people in need.” (Karen)
