The Global 6K for Water exists to champion World Vision’s vital work in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). But what does that really mean? Through this initiative, we’re helping bring clean water and improved sanitation to communities that need it most — transforming lives, one step at a time.
Due to population growth, industrial advances, climate change, environmental pollution, uneven share of resources and other reasons, many of the world’s impoverished communities are still unable to enjoy clean water.
More than 2.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safely managed drinking water*. Millions of children and women walk up to 6 kilometers daily to fetch water — often from contaminated sources — putting their health at risk and depriving children of the opportunity to attend school.
* “Safely managed drinking water” is the highest standard of water service tracked under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6.1). It refers to water that: (1) coming from an improved water source which is located on premises (e.g., piped water, boreholes, protected wells), (2) available when needed and (3) free of faecal and priority contamination.
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) is one of World Vision’s core focus areas. It includes clean water supply, personal hygiene, and public sanitation. By helping communities access clean water and improve hygiene, we aim to give children healthier and more fulfilling lives.
Construct facilities such as boreholes, water pipe systems and water points to supply and store clean water, enabling access to water within communities.
Construct hygienic toilets, advocate for eradication of open-air defecation, promote proper management of solid and liquid waste, etc.
Construct handwashing facilities and promote menstrual hygiene for women and girls.
World Vision is committed to expanding WASH projects. On average, World Vision is reaching one new person with clean water every 10 seconds and reaches three more schools every day with clean water.
From 2021 to 2024, World Vision Hong Kong supported 106 WASH-related projects across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, including countries like Uganda, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and more.
Esther and her daughter Forget used to walk an hour each day to reach an unreliable borehole, often returning home without water. Forget was sacrificing precious study time for these treks. After World Vision installed a piped water system in their community, they now have access to clean and safe water right at home.
Esther shared joyfully, “Now we can take showers and clean our homes, making our community healthier. Forget can focus on school, and her grades have improved significantly.”
With a steady water supply, Esther started a poultry project, earning income to provide nutritious food for her children.
Students Grey (Grade 7) and Faith (Grade 6) once suffered headaches from dehydration. The only available water source on campus was shared with cattle, exposing them to the risk of contamination. Now, clean water has transformed their school environment.
Grey said: “We no longer bring water from home, we can wash our hands at school, and toilets are cleaned daily, reducing illness.”
Faith added: “Clean water brings a brighter future for us and our community.”
While Zimbabwe has made progress, many impoverished communities around the world continue to face severe water shortages — challenges that deeply impact children's growth, health, and overall quality of life.
Access to clean and safe drinking water is a basic human right. We invite you to join us in supporting our water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives across Africa — so that more children and communities can gain access to life-changing clean water as soon as possible.
