Sponsors' Stories
Professor Tony Mok – a Doctor with a Caring and Loving Heart
Professor Mok meets with his sponsored child, Chanella, for the first time and shows the small gifts, such as T-shirt, stationery and football, that he bought for her.
For Professor Mok, being able to go to Africa to visit his sponsored child, Chanella Muhayimama, in person and see for himself her practical needs means a lot to him.
5-year-old Chanella wishes to become a teacher one day. She was having a fever and was feeling lethargic when Professor Mok came to visit. Professor Mok found that her scalp was a bit infected, causing inflammation and fever. This could be due to the unhygienic environment. Professor Mok applied some disinfectant on her wound and left some medicine with her to help her recover.
The cure is not enough though. Professor Mok knows too well that there is still a long way to go if he were to help the 5-year-old child to realise her dream of becoming a teacher. She will need to go to school, have enough to eat every day and be able to grow up in a healthy environment. As such, he is more than willing to help Chanella’s family and her community gradually improve their livelihood through World Vision’s “Child Sponsorship Programme” in order to bring Chanella closer to fulfilling her wish.
Chanella is having a fever and Professor Mok carefully gives her an examination.
“Being a child sponsor enables me to truly and directly care for an impoverished child. This is not just a matter of money. It is about how one person contributes, no matter how small, towards another person’s life, in the hope that he will be able to help pave a brighter future for the child.”
Professor’s Mok’s heart-felt sharing reveals his care and love for children that move the hearts of many!

Priceless Gifts to Sammi Cheng
Sammi is very delighted to receive photos and paper crane from her sponsored child Joy in Laos.
When I received the birthday gifts – floral drawing, paper crane and caterpillar, photos and letters – from my sponsored children Joy in Laos and Bayarjargal in Mongolia, I felt extremely touched and remarkably surprised! These handmade gifts, one of a kind, resemble priceless meanings to me.
From the gifts, I am delighted to see not only children’s gratefulness but also the transformation of their lives due to World Vision’s Child Sponsorship – with educational opportunities and improved living conditions, they can grow up healthy and happy with hopes of ending poverty and living self-sustainably in the long run. From Joy’s recent photo, I see a grown and stronger boy who used to be undernourished and stunted. The incomparable joy and satisfaction is something that no other thing can offer.
Although I don’t correspond with them regularly every month, the bonding with these sponsored children is inexpressible. In the Child Sponsorship Programme, while I give, I also receive, love. I hope more people can join me to become child sponsors: to help the needy children and make the world a more beautiful place!

Touching Moments With Sylvia Chang

Seeing Gandulam grow into such a fine young lady, Sylvia feels joy and a sense of achievement.
"Although I haven't seen her for seven years, I could still immediately recognise this charming young lady in front of me. She is Gandulam, my Mongolian sponsored child whom I visited seven years ago with World Vision.
Back then, I was made aware that despite working for more than 10 hours at a construction site, Gandulam's mother could not earn enough to support her three children. Gandulam, nine at the time, had to take up the responsibility of a parent over her younger brother and sister. I was worried about their livelihood and future. 'If I don't sponsor Gandulam,' I thought, 'she may have to live as a scavenger or become a street child and be homeless!' Because of this, I became Gandulam's sponsor.
Today, Gandulam is graceful and presentable. She has done well academically and hopes to go to university and become a journalist. The living conditions of her family are also improving. Seeing her now and knowing this makes me so happy, so fulfilled!
I am glad to have made the correct decision that day. Sponsoring children can change their lives. Please join us – be a sponsor and help more children like Gandulam!"

Gigi Leung, a Child Sponsor: The Unforgettable Experience of Being with the Child

Gigi watches as her sponsored child, sitting beside her, reads and counts
“With my sponsored child sitting on my lap and her sister by our side, we read and counted together. It was so warm and moving that we were like a family.” Last year, Gigi joined World Vision’s supporter tour to India, where she met with her sponsored child, Nada, and witnessed the changes brought about by the “Child Sponsorship Programme”.
“I recognised her right away when we went to visit the school on the first day. She was one of the performers. At first, she was a bit shy but she gradually warmed up to me after we were introduced to each other. Her smile moved me in a way that I will never forget.” Nada’s shy yet sweet smile made Gigi very happy and left a lasting memory in her mind. The source of happiness can be very simple.
Warmth does not only come from embrace but also from the continuous blessings from afar |
“I will definitely share all my happy experiences as a child sponsor with my friends and relatives to encourage more people to help these impoverished children through World Vision. The changes brought about by our small contributions are so unimaginable.” The visit to India enabled Gigi to witness how the small contributions from child sponsors can help World Vision carry out various projects within the community, and how these projects in turn help to maintain the continuing development of sponsored children as well as the communities that they live in. “It never occurred to me how much my sponsored child would love the book I sent to her and read it every day!” Indeed, sharing can also be very simple. Simple sharing can bring about simple happiness, but the love that it entails is not simple at all. |
Passing on Love: Once a Sponsored Child, Now a Child Sponsor

The sponsorship Ping received when she was young provided her with access to life’s basic necessities.
“I am not rich, but I am willing to become your second mother,” said Lau Siu Ping’s sponsor many years ago. These words deeply touched little Ping and have since changed her life.
Ping was born the youngest daughter in a Macau family of nine children in the ’50s. Her father died when she was three. Because her mother had to earn a living, she put Ping in a day-care centre and then in Timothy’s Childcare Centre, sponsored by World Vision, to become a sponsored child. When Ping was five and six years old, she regularly received letters from her foreign sponsor. “Without her help, I would not have the chance of education,” said Ping now, with much gratefulness.
Ping (left) always encourages her family to help others. Her daughter Cherry has also become a sponsor as a result. |
“Through World Vision’s sponsorship, I deeply understand the importance and beauty of helping. While I was young, I determined to offer help if one day I had the opportunity,” continued Ping. By saving wherever possible, Ping fulfilled her promise and has been a World Vision sponsor since 2001. Her first sponsored child is a boy Ge, living in Guizhou, China. “Whenever I received an annual progress report from Ge, I was delighted to see him growing stronger year by year. He also drew better each year in the New Year card too! I thought of myself as a second mother to Ge, just as my sponsored mother did to me. I hope Ge can grow up to become a person who is enthusiastic to help, passing on love to others.” Ping has just recently sponsored an African child, starting another journey of love. The experience of being sponsored gives Ping a motto of “helping others”, enriching her life with happiness and fantastic meanings. |
