Extremely Severe Cyclone Hits India, Affecting Over 3 Million People

Extremely severe cyclone Fani, the strongest summer cyclone to hit India’s East Coast Odisha state in 43 years, made its landfall on 3 May in Puri. Despite the authority’s prompt evacuation of over a million people prior to the storm’s landfall, the cyclone has made widespread devastation to affected communities, destroying homes, schools, crops, livestock and livelihoods. It is estimated that over 3 million people have been directly affected by Fani. While the actual figures of casualties still need to be confirmed, they are expected to be much higher than the current ones.

“Our response teams on ground in Odisha are assessing the situation to begin immediate relief response.” said Franklin Jones, Head – Humanitarian Emergency Affairs, World Vision India. Our staff is conducting rapid assessment on the ground and has set up Child Friendly Spaces to provide protection for children. Our next step is to provide shelters and emergency relief items to those in need. Children and families urgently need shelters, food and clean water. We now call on the Hong Kong community to support India during this difficult time.
