Around 1,000 Hongkongers Call for Supports to Syrian Refugee Children

World Vision Hong Kong held the “Peace for Every Child Charity Walk” on 6 October in association with the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club. The event attracted more than 1,000 participants to support Syrian refugees in need. Funds raised this year will provide food assistance and learning opportunities for Syrian families and children.

At this year’s event, multiple interactive activities were added to enhance the public’s understanding of the hardship faced by refugees. Workshops of tent-building, child labour and language-learning were set up for participants to experience the livelihood of refugees. Videos were shown to tell the heartfelt wishes of Syrian children. Participants also stepped into crowded rooms which simulated the scene of tents in most settlement. Handicrafts production was also set on the site.

Kevin Chiu, CEO of World Vision Hong Kong, said, “Reaching almost its eighth year, the conflict in Syria has displaced tens of millions of people. Over 5.6 million people have sought refuge in other countries. About 3.7 million children under five have grown up knowing nothing but conflict.”

Since 2011, World Vision has been offering assistance in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq, such as providing learning opportunities and psychosocial support for children, constructing water facilities and latrines for refugees, and distributing household items. In 2017, World Vision has reached almost 2.2 million people, including 1.3 million children. For details, please go to: www.worldvision.org.hk/en/our-work/syrian-refugee-response.
