2. When can we organise a School Famine?
Answer: The School Famine can be held on any date during the school year. Remember to check your school calendar first to avoid clashes with any other major events.

3. Can we organise a famine event without making a prior notification to World Vision?
Answer: We recommend that you send an enrolment form to World Vision before the event in order to benefit from the following:
- Permission to use World Vision's logo (each designs should be approved by World Vision before use) (hyperlink to Q15)
- Loan of educational resources such as exhibition boards and other audio-visual material
- Thematic talk delivered by World Vision staff
- Posters, stickers and souvenirs for the School Famine
- Certificates of participation and appreciation to organisers
- Advice from World Vision for organising the famine
4. Are the resources and thematic talks provided by World Vision free of charge?
Answer: All educational resources and thematic talks are provided free of charge by World Vision.
5. What should we do to invite World Vision to deliver a thematic talk at our school on the day of the Famine?
Answer: Please fill out the enrolment form and fax it to 2394 0566 at least 2 weeks in advance. World Vision will contact you for further arrangements after receiving your application. The number of talks per month is limited and is allocated on a first come first served basis.
6. When will World Vision contact us after receiving our enrolment form?
Answer: World Vision will try to contact you within three working days of receiving your enrolment form. Please call World Vision if you have not heard from us after one week.
7. Is the booking of the thematic talk confirmed as soon as we submit the enrolment form?
Answer: No, it depends on our availability on that day. World Vision will call you first to agree the date and time, and then fax you an initial reply. You must then reply by fax or email to confirm the booking.
8. Can World Vision deliver the educational resources to our school?
Answer: Schools are required to collect the resources from World Vision's office. The resources must also be returned us after use.
Getting started
9. Where do we start if we want to organise a famine event?
Please go to the organising kit.
10. We are planning to organise a 12/24/30-Hour Famine. What programmes shall we include? (applicable to secondary school level or above)
Answer: We suggest the following programmes: an opening ceremony, ice-breaking games, group activities, a sharing session by World Vision staff or some other guests, experiential activities, debriefing, shows, countdown, etc. You can decide on the programme order and contents and are welcome to contact us for further assistance.
14. Can World Vision help us invite celebrities or other guests to our famine event?
Answer: Apart from World Vision events, we do not usually invite celebrities or other guests on behalf of other organisations. Therefore, schools must make their own arrangements if they wish to invite celebrities or other guests.
15. Can we design our own promotional poster? Do we need the approval of World Vision for these designs?
Answer: We recommend that you use the promotional posters designed by World Vision for School Famines, but you are also welcome to design your own promotional material. If you want to use World Vision's name or logo, the proposed design must be submitted to World Vision for approval. Please allow at least 7 working days for review and feedback.
16. Do we need to distribute Parental Consent Letters?
Answer: For Secondary School level or below, participating students should obtain parents’ consent to take part in the famine event.
Fundraising
17. What are the reasons for raising donations from our famine event? Will our donations help people in need?
Answer: World Vision sets out the use of funds raised from the School Famine each year.

18. Is it compulsory to raise donations for World Vision from our School Famine?
Answer: It is your decision whether to raise donations. We believe that having a realistic fundraising target for your School Famine can help engage students in the event. Please take a look in GO fundraising for fundraising targets.
19. How will the donations be used?
Answer: Please refer to GO fundraising for the use of funds.
21. Where can we find sponsorship forms? What should we do with them?
Answer: Please indicate your request for the sponsorship forms on your enrolment form, and we will email them to you. Please use it carefully for the stated purposes and do not circulate the soft copy to avoid unauthorised fundraising. Only hard copies should be distributed to participants; each form must bear the stamp of your school or student committee as well as a unique sequential number to certify that it is a legitimate sponsorship form.
22. How can we raise more funds?
Answer: If you want to raise more funds from your famine event, you need to encourage your students to be a voice for the poor and be active in identifying and approaching more sponsors. The organisers, the participants and their sponsor should believe that these donations can genuinely help improve the lives of children. You can explain the fundraising challenges to the participants and the benefits to the poor if the fundraising target is reached or exceeded. The participants can print out or forward the details from GO fundraising to the sponsors.
23. How big is the donation box? And how many of donation boxes can we borrow?
Answer: There are two sizes of donation boxes:
- Large: 30 cm (Length) x 22 cm (Width) x 20 cm (Height) (maximum 2 boxes per school and subject to availability)
- Small: 17 cm (Length) x 12 cm (Width) x 18 cm (Height) (maximum 7 boxes per school and subject to availability)
World Vision will contact you after receiving your application.
24. What are the procedures for booking donation boxes?
Answer:
- Please complete and return the enrolment form to World Vision at least 10 working days before your event. For Secondary School level or above, please also complete the donation box booking form.
- World Vision will contact you within 3 working days after receiving your application.
- The donation box(es) will be delivered to your school usually 1-2 days before the event. The school office or contact person should sign and apply the school stamp on the “Donation Box Receipt” to confirm receipt of the donation box(es).
- Every donation box has a chain attached. Where necessary, secure the chain to a fixed object using your own pedlock. (hyperlink to 26)
- World Vision will collect the donation box(es) one to two days after your event. Your school must sign and stamp on the "Donation Box Returned Slip" to confirm that the donation box(es) has/have been stored under lock and is/are being returned.
- World Vision will count the donations and send a Receipt Acknowledgement to you within three weeks.
- An official receipt will be sent to you 6-8 weeks after World Vision collects the donation box(es).
25. Can we collect or return the donation box ourselves at the World Vision Office?
Answer: For security reasons, World Vision will arrange the delivery and collection of donation box(es) to/from your school.
26. What procedures should I follow to ensure the security of the donation box?
Answer: All donation boxes should be kept and stored in a secure manner. For details, please refer to the Storage and Security of Donation Box at the donation box booking form.
27. Will World Vision provide an official receipt for donations?
Answer: Please refer to the donation handling.
28. When will we receive the official receipt(s)?
Answer: The official receipt(s) will be sent to you 6-8 weeks after World Vision receives the donations.
The Famine Day
29. Being the event organisers, do we need to join the famine event with the other participants?
Answer: World Vision encourages all organisers to join the famine event with other participants to boost the morale. However, if you are not physically fit for it, please do not impose on yourself.
30. Is there anything we can’t do during the School Famine?
Answer: If health permits, participating students at secondary school level or above should abstain from all solid food during the event. They should drink only water, fruit juice, milk or other kinds of light drinks. But it all depends on the format of your famine event.
