Why Famine?

It takes us only a few months to organise a 12-Hour Famine, but it means so much to the children who suffer from hunger pangs every day. When they know that there are still people in the world who care for them and are willing to lend a hand to help, they’ll surely feel hopeful for their future.

It’s only a small amount of money and it might not make a whole lot of difference to the children living in poverty. But we are hoping that it can at least change our mindset to make a more significant difference in the future.

After this activity, I’ve learnt that I am really very lucky to be born in such a wealthy city and have the opportunity to study…these are just a few of the things I’ve learnt from this event.

Among all the assignments and different activities I’ve organised in school, Famine takes the most effort and time, yet, it brings the greatest sense of satisfaction and fulfilment of everything.

This activity has great educational impact. It allows the organising committee to learn outside books and to realise the importance of being content. I hope I can get involved in more famine activities in the days to come!

From the research, I’ve learnt more about different poverty and development issues, and the social problems that arise due to food shortages. This activity has also improved my leadership and communication skills a lot.

Students have learnt a lot from famine activities. They have learnt to care about global humanitarian issues and show their love through action.

…at that moment, the feeling of achievement and knowing that your actions will help the children was simply AWESOME.

I will treasure the food I have and donate my pocket money to help the hungry children.

Not only did we raise the school’s awareness about people living in poverty and raise funds for the child sponsorship programme, I gained the meaningful experience of being a leader and working cooperatively with many different people in and outside of the school.

Famine 10 is not an ordinary school event. It is a memorable, meaningful and definitely worthwhile experience which I believe everyone in the school should participate.

After this event, I become conscious on the fact that many human beings in our world are under poverty, and are in need of the basic necessities… This made me realise how fortunate we are.
