School Famine
"School Famine" is an extension of World Vision's "30-Hour Famine". Its aim is to encourage students to organise or participate in different kinds of famine activities in the academic year, to experience the hunger pangs first hand, so that they may reflect on their lives and values and extend their help towards those living in hunger.
The theme this year is "Act Now to End Silent Hunger". Tsunamis, floods or earthquakes easily catch the attention of the whole city, but hunger is a long-term situation. It fails to hit the headlines because it is not sudden, or shocking enough. That is why many people do not see or hear of the needs of those in hunger.
Hunger has been eating into the lives of young children. It causes malnutrition and hence mental retardation, illnesses and even deaths. To survive, children have to stop going to school and go to work instead. They only hope to have enough to eat and wear, be able to go to school and to grow healthily. The question is, who is willing to save them from hunger and give them the chance to live a healthy life?
