Encourage kindergartens and primary schools to organise the "Give Me 5" handprint group painting to put up

child health issue. (Activity Guidelines)

Joint Declaration by 100,000 People

Our heartfelt thanks go to the enthusiastic support from 102,725 people of Hong Kong and Macau, including the students from over 80 kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools and tertiary institutes. An open
letter was sent to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations Secretary-General, on March 1 to urge
all governments to allocate more resources on child health as well as preventing children
from succumbing to preventable diseases. Also, a letter by a local student Jong-Min
(Jason) Choi, stating his enthusiastic hope for the United Nations to save these vulnerable
children, was sent along with the open letter. (Browse our Letter to the UN)

Help children live beyond the age of five, please continue to call for students'
attenion on the child health crisis.

*Special thanks to Fingerprint Ltd. for sponsoring the paper and printing.

Remarks: The number of people who signed the Joint Declaration is as at January 24, 2011

Promote vaccinations for 100 children under 5 through educating their parents and training medical staff.

Vaccinations, such as B.C.G. vaccines and de-worming medicine can effectively improve the health of children under 5. Unfortunately, in Burundi, Africa, parents do not understand the importance of vaccinations and medical staff lack relevant training. Hence, children are easily infected with preventable diseases at a very young age, and some even die.

Provide insecticide-treated bed nets for 20 families to protect children against malaria.

Insecticide-treated bed nets can help prevent children from contracting malaria. But sadly, in India, many families are too poor to afford a bed net. Children are frequently bitten by mosquitos at night. The sister of a young Indian boy named Rashid died from malaria because their family could not afford a bed net – she was not even two when she died.

Offers nutritional supplements, such as vitamins and folic acid for 50 pregnant women to prevent infant malnutrition in the womb.

A key factor in determining whether an infant will grow up healthy or not is whether their mothers receive adequate nutrition during pregnancy. A good example is Aye, a four-year-old Myanmar girl, whose mother was malnourished when she was pregnant. Consequently, Aye has been constantly ill since birth. She is malnourished and so weak that she can barely walk.

*Schools can organise its fundraising event and if needed, borrow a World Vision donation box . For details, please refer to the donation form.

We invite schools and/or students to sponsor a child individually or as a group. Together, we can help provide a healthy environment and hopeful future for children.

World Vision Child Sponsorship is a child-focused and community-based programme. With HK$7 a day from a sponsor, we pool donations from all sponsors to implement 10 to 15-year "Area Development Programmes" (ADP) in the sponsored children’s communities. The programme works directly with families and communities to encourage participation in community development work. This increases their capabilities and enables families of sponsored children or even the whole community to break the cycle of poverty and become self-reliant. For sponsored children, the programme ensures that they receive the basic needs for living such as nutritious food, clean water, medical care and educational opportunities.

Needy children cannot wait – please join Child Sponsorship now!
