Snowstorm Relief Work in China In January 2008, the severest snowstorm in 50 years swept across 21 provinces of China, damaging 120 million hectares of farmland and collapsing over 2 million houses. More than 1.6 million of people were made homeless and evacuated to safer places. In response to World Vision's appeal since February 1, we have raised funds from the public including commercial companies, schools and churches to help snowstorm-affected people. By the end of March, we have raised HK$29 million (including HK$9 million of government funding) to help snowstorm victims. World Vision Completed First Phase of Relief Operations To ease the desperation of the affected villagers, World Vision deployed 40 staff from China office to carry out relief operations and successfully completed the first phase of relief operations, helping over 300,000 villagers. By the end of March, we distributed 45,512 quilts to more than 90,000 people and 260 power generators, benefiting over 60,000 people living in rural villages. In addition, we distributed 2.2 million kg of rice, equivalent to one month's food ration for over 140,000 people. In April, World Vision continues to engage in long-term rehabilitation work such as rebuilding of houses, construction of schools, water pipe repair and implementation of agricultural recovery projects to help affected villagers resume their normal livelihoods. Our relief operations and rehabilitation works are highlighted as follows (as at the end of March): Act now! Join World Vision to help snowstorm-stricken
