90-Day Relief Work Report
Three months after the quake, World Vision has shifted its focus from relief to helping quake survivors rebuild their livelihoods. Thanks to your great generosity, World Vision Hong Kong has received over HK$270 million in donations (including government funding) towards the Sichuan earthquake relief fund as at early August. We pledge to channel 100% of donations to quake-related work. World Vision has been at the forefront of relief operations since the first few days following the earthquake. We promptly dispatched relief items such as quilts, shelter materials and rice, etc. to desperate quake survivors, benefiting nearly 120,000 people in eight counties/ cities in Sichuan and Shaanxi Provinces in the first month after the quake. In the first 90 days, World Vision channeled HK$46 million to help over 573,000 quake survivors across Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi. Currently, communities are at various stages of recovery. World Vision will continue to implement recovery programmes and has drawn up a two-year relief and rehabilitation plan, costing over HK$431 million and estimated to benefit more than one million people.
Looking Ahead
Education: Construct 87 schools and dormitories in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi, benefiting over 34,000 children Shelter: Assist 6,300 families to rebuild homes with better disaster-resistant materials such as steel and cement Healthcare: Reconstruct 12 health clinics and undertake public health education projects to teach villagers personal hygiene and disease prevention Community Development: Reconstruct infrastructure and provide agricultural assistance for 6,500 affected families to help them restore their livelihoods. More importantly, we will empower communities through leadership training so that they can become self-reliant in the long run *The rehabilitation plan is subject to change after further assessments and coordination.
Monitoring and Accountability World Vision is directly involved in the implementation and monitoring of relief and rehabilitation activities as well as carrying out on-site supervision in townships at various stages. Preparation stage:World Vision staff will negotiate the quality and price of commodities, supervise the packaging and transportation of commodities, and compare the quality of commodities against samples. Distribution stage: World Vision staff will be on site to oversee the distribution process and collect beneficiary lists with the signature or fingerprint of beneficiaries. After distribution, a monitoring team will visit selected samples of beneficiaries to verify the actual quantity received. Rehabilitation stage: World Vision will work with local governments from the point of site selection to organising construction tender bidding, progress monitoring as well as different stages of inspection and quality checks for school reconstruction. World Vision operates on and values accountability to our supporters and to the communities with whom we work. Accountability mechanisms are also embraced to ensure high standards of programme quality and delivery. |
