Starting Life in the Rubble

The catastrophic quake in Haiti has affected at least 3 million people already living in extreme poverty, especially children who are most vulnerable in these times of devastation. Over 220,000 were killed; more than 1.7 million have been left homeless; 2 million are in need of aid.

Staff Working Day and Night

World Vision has been working in Haiti over 30 years. Our relief teams work tirelessly day and night to help survivors. Gifts from generous donors like you are bringing hope to them. During the first three months after the earthquake, you have helped us meet their critical needs:

  • Food distributions: 1.6 million people fed
  • Life-saving supplies: more than 120,000 people reached
  • Water and sanitation: 17 displacement camps served
  • Protecting children: 15 Child Friendly Spaces set up

Helping Haiti: a marathon, not a sprint

Our efforts to help Haiti recover from this disaster are just the beginning. World Vision will be there for the long-haul – helping build Haiti back stronger.

Protecting children - We will continue to establish and support Child Friendly Spaces, giving children a safe place to play, learn, and receive emotional support.

Providing shelter - In the short term, we will continue to provide temporary shelter for as many displaced families as possible — especially critical as Haiti enters its rainy season. We will also collaborate with communities to design and develop the long-term infrastructure needed to meet the needs of children and families.

Renewing opportunity - We will work to create income-generating opportunities for the community. We will provide small loans and vocational training where appropriate, equipping hardworking parents to lift their families out of poverty.

Restoring health - Providing quality medical care for displaced children remains an urgent priority. Our mobile clinics and healthcare professionals will also provide prenatal and postnatal care for pregnant woman in displacement camps.

Preventing illness - We will continue working to improve the sanitary conditions in displacement camps throughout Port-au-Prince. Our priority is to help families stay healthy now and during the coming rainy season.

Together we’re helping Haiti rebuild.

HK$2,500 can provide 18 families with kitchen sets while HK$1,000 can provide 18 families with hygiene kits. Please donate to help the relief and rebuilding effort today.

Haiti Fast Facts

  • Located in Caribbean, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, west of Dominican Republic
  • One of the poorest countries in the world, with half of the population living in extreme poverty, earning less than US$1.25 dollar (HK$10 dollars) a day
  • Rural households spend almost 60% of their income on food; the poorest families spend more than 70%
  • Chronic malnutrition affects 24% of children under five, rising as high as 40% in the poorest zones; high food and fuel prices trigger violent demonstrations and political upheaval
  • Haiti is devastated by frequent natural disasters. In 2008, three hurricanes and one tropical storm struck Haiti, killing 800 people, destroying 27,000 homes and raising the general level of hunger. The catastrophic quake certainly is going to worsen the living situation for the people
